Uses

Ranitidine is a H2-blocker that reduces the amount of acid in the stomach. It is used in children to treat/prevent ulcers and to treat gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD).

How to take

This medication is best given with or immediately after meals, as directed by the doctor. Do not chew or swallow the tablets whole. Dissolve 1 tablet in at least 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) of water. After the tablet is completely dissolved, give the solution by mouth.

Precaution

Before using ranitidine, tell the doctor or pharmacist if your child is allergic to it; or if your child has any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell the doctor or pharmacist your child's medical history, especially of: heartburn combined with lightheadedness or sweating or dizziness, chest pain or shoulder/jaw pain especially with shortness of breath, pain spreading to arms or neck or shoulders, unexplained weight loss, liver problems, other stomach problems (e.g., tumors), kidney disease, blood disorders (acute porphyria). This medicine may contain aspartame. If your child has phenylketonuria (PKU) or any other condition where intake of aspartame (or phenylalanine) must be restricted, consult the doctor or pharmacist regarding the safe use of this medicine. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug interactions

Before using this medication, tell the doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products your child may use, especially of: atazanavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, triazolam. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
